'William Tillyer at work on Cape Cod'

The last three weeks of October were spent on Cape Cod working on a new series of watercolours which will form a part of one of the exhibitions coming up at the start of 2010.  William Tillyer has been working with the New York based poet and critic John Yau and the trip to the Cape provided an opportunity for some augmented discussion around the new work which John was able to see in progress.

Cape Cod was an inspiration when Henry David Thoreau wrote 'Cape Cod' in 1865, it's attraction was obvious in the mid 70's when Tillyer first explored the Cape as Visiting Professor at Brown University and the intervening years have done nothing to diminish the power of the long beaches and atlantic light.

From the chapter "The Sea And The Desert" in Henry David Thoreau's Cape Cod:

"The sea-shore is a sort of neutral ground, a most advantageous point from which to contemplate this world. It is even a trivial place. The waves forever rolling to the land are too far-travelled and untamable to be familiar. Creeping along the endless beach amid the sun-squall and the foam, it occurs to us that we, too, are the product of sea-slime."
